Congress leader and Uttar Pradesh party in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam has challenged the government’s reported 7.8% GDP growth for the first quarter of the 2026-27 fiscal year, dismissing the figures as a manipulation by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The criticism follows a video message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighting the economic milestone, sparking a fresh political standoff over the state of the national economy.

Opposition Questions Economic Reality

Gautam argued that the government’s growth claims are disconnected from the ground reality, citing widespread unemployment and a decline in domestic production. He alleged that India is currently grappling with a crisis of 8.7 crore unemployed youth, claiming that the ruling party is creating an “army of the unemployed.”

Beyond employment concerns, the Congress leader further targeted the administration’s track record, pointing to rising costs in the education sector and labeling the government’s foreign policy as a failure. He maintained that the reported GDP surge does not translate into tangible benefits for the common citizen.

BJP Defends Growth Figures

The BJP swiftly rejected these accusations, with chief party spokesperson for Uttar Pradesh, Dinesh Pratap Singh, asserting that GDP metrics are objective economic indicators rather than party-generated data.

Defending the government’s economic performance, Singh stated:

  • The 7.8% growth rate was achieved during a period when several major global economies are struggling.
  • The figures serve as a testament to Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
  • India’s consistent economic trajectory highlights the resilience of the nation’s policies despite international volatility.
